How do we encourage people to donate to the DI in a down economy?

It starts with getting to know who we’re talking to.

We set out to learn more about the DI’s loyal donors.

We asked them about their perceptions of the DI, and we learned that people believe in restoring dignity to the homeless community. People were ready and willing to give but, in a bad economy, they wanted to be sure that their donations were directly helping those in need.

One word came up over and over again in our research – dignity.

So we made a film about dignity.

Lives Begin gave a face to the challenge, and changed the perception of homelessness in Calgary.

Karo Drop In Centre Conclusion

In a down economy, the key to getting support was to give donors permission to give less.

When you arrive on the landing page, you can see exactly how your donations are being spent.

This specific breakdown reinforces our message that every donation, no matter the size, makes a positive impact.

In a year when most not-for-profits were seeing dramatic decreases in support, the Calgary Drop-In Centre saw an increase in donations.
