Canada Post has launched a real store on the virtual 3-D world of Second Life, demonstrating the sorts of opportunities that exist on the hugely popular website. Now, online shoppers can shop for real merchandise with Canada Post's retail partners at Second Life.
Millions of people around the world are creating virtual objects and experiences on Second Life, a 3-D world that's created entirely by visitors to the site. It lets you express your creativity instantly by building everything from strobe lights in a virtual nightclub to a spaceship winging its way across the galaxy. Second Life lays down the challenge: "Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have a pair of black leather wings? Build them and give it a go."
We're not sure about leather wings, but we think Second Life could help our Environments group by pre-visualizing a physical space before it's built. A hotel did exactly this: they built the hotel in Second Life and invited people to check it out, explore it and provide feedback. Then they tweaked it for a while and when they were happy with it, they broke ground and built the actual hotel. Cool.
