Karo helps kids around the world

Friday, December 21, 2007

The people of Karo Group have come together to make a difference in the lives of children in developing countries. We have participated in the “One Laptop Per Child” (OLPC) initiative to provide school-age children with laptop computers. “The laptop program inspired everyone at Karo with its simplicity—through the co-operation of entrepreneurs and designers, children around the world get a great educational tool. One we hope will inspire them to keep learning.” Keith Moe, Calgary office.

Karo and Karo staff partnered to purchase 39 laptops in support of this program. The laptops are extremely durable, built in consideration of likely conditions in developing nations. They are very user-friendly, with local language support built in to allow students from various backgrounds to easily learn and share.

Karo shares the belief that education is a priority, not a privilege, for all children. “This is proof that really good ideas are global—we’re all working together to bring laptops to children in developing nations. Better education brings better opportunities, and it’s easier than you think to help kids learn. They’ve got the brains; they just need the right tools to help them grow.” Julie Oudot, Vancouver office. Currently the One Laptop Per Child is working with Afghanistan, Cambodia, Haiti, Mongolia and Rwanda. Through donation of laptops, Karo is directly helping children to learn, and indirectly helping their countries to develop a precious resource: the children themselves.
