Store Interior Design

2001

THE CHALLENGE    A well-known retail store decided to move from its shopping mall location to a street-level storefront in downtown Calgary. The move inspired a change in philosophy and design. Explains owner Wayne Headley, “We’re going for the community feel. I want to make people of all ages see our store as part of their neighbourhood.”

THE KARO SOLUTION    Karo’s intent was to create minimalist environment that still had human appeal. We merged contrasting elements – rough, natural materials with metallic and electronic accessories – to mirror the ‘young/old’ theme of a modern clothing store. Coloured fabric panels and small areas of intense colour acted as transitional elements to draw the customer's eye to the clothing. Wall surfaces of untreated lumber and sandstone slabs on the floor are paired with sleek, white metal shelving and counters, as well as dramatic, lime green wall heavily lighted with fluorescents.

We cut an opening in the floor, and placed a glass wall at the head of the stairs to allow light to filter down to the main level, attracting customer attention.

THE RESULT    The new look makes it possible for the owner to include a variety of clothing styles to suit all ages and lifestyles. The blend of ultra-modern and timeless elements underscores the wide range of apparel offered, and the shopping experience is relaxed and efficient for everyone from the nightclub set to the casual wear crowd.
